At Hammersmith Hospital, our patients come from a diverse mix of backgrounds. We offer opportunities in all of the following areas:

Elderly care and frailty (including infectious diseases)

We care for the elderly in a 21 bedded ward including eleven beds for patients with infectious diseases. In this role you will perfect your skills and develop techniques in managing acute and complex care.

We will offer you the chance to develop your skills in managing complex care alongside developing your academic portfolio as a clinical expert of the future, including an opportunity to undertake specialist courses in infectious diseases and in care for the elderly medicine. 

We use innovative methods to achieve best experience outcomes for our patients like the use of pet therapy and activities to encourage social skills. 

Planned Investigations Unit (PIU)

In our 28 bedded nurse-led unit, we specialise in the management of patients undergoing tests and treatments (on a day case or short stay basis) for a range of conditions. Referrals in to the unit come from a range of specialist teams across the hospital, including:

Endocrine/diabetes

Our endocrinology service will give you the opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary approach to specialist diabetes care. You will work with world-class consultant endocrinologists, specialist endocrine and diabetes nurses, dietitians, podiatry specialists and psychologists to achieve the best quality care for our patients.

You will gain experience in administering a wide range of specialist tests including short and long synacthen, glucose tolerance testing, glucagon stress testing, insulin tolerance tests and supervised fasting to name just a few.


Gastroenterology

You will have the opportunity to care for patients with a range of gastroenterological conditions including Crohn’s disease, coeliac, peptic ulcers, cancers of the oesophagus and patients undergoing a number of procedures including ERCP, MRCP, lithotripsy and hepatobiliary stenting.

We will continue to train and develop you throughout your career with us. You will be provided mentorship by an experience senior nurse  and will be given opportunities to work with  and learn from our IBD clinical specialist nurses.

Rheumatology

You will be responsible for caring for patients with rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis who are being treated with biologic and anti-Tnf intravenous infusions and injections. This is a great role if you want the opportunity to train as a rheumatology nurse specialist our existing nurse specialists are on hand to support you every step of the way.

Respiratory

If you are looking to develop your career in respiratory medicine, then we can provide you with an excellent foundation. You will have the opportunity to follow your patients through their care path including theatres, imaging/interventional radiotherapy and endoscopy. We will ensure you have plenty of opportunities to observe and ask questions.

Your patients will have a range of respiratory conditions including pulmonary arterial venous malformation, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancers.

Alongside your specialist development we will make sure you are given training and support in all core skills including infection control, recognising deteriorating patients, IV cannulation and dementia. From the very beginning you will be supported with a local induction and you will have guidance every step of the way with our mentorship programme.

We will offer you opportunities to develop and expand your range of skills and be part of a multi-specialty team.

General medicine

As a general nurse at Hammersmith Hospital you can deepen your understanding and nursing skills with access to specialist treatment areas such as cardiovascular, hepatology gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases and nursing patients with renal disease related problems like gastrointestinal and orthopaedic complications.
